After undergoing the painstaking process of evaluating both your family situation and your finances, you may decide, as many women physicians do, that you are going to work part-time. In one study, more than half of female senior pediatric residents expressed interest in part-time employment within five years of graduation, as compared to 14% of men (Cull, 2002). Start by thinking about your job description: the exact duties and the time you need to do them well and be satisfied. There are many jobs in the medical field, especially those in academic medicine, that appear on paper to be part-time, but are in reality full-time or even “full-time plus.”
